Psychiatric disorders in wives of alcohol dependence syndrome patients

Alcohol Dependence Syndrome is one of the most common psychiatric disorders in the general population and has a significant impact on public health. Alcohol Dependence Syndrome could be considered as a disorder of the family. It has deleterious consequences not only on the patient with Alcohol Dependence Syndrome but also on the members of his family. The wives of patients with alcohol use disorders are on most occasions the core members of the dysfunctional family system. The aim of the present work is to study the physical and mental health status in wives of alcohol dependent patients. The present study was conducted at Institute of Mental health, Hyderabad from 2008-09. The present study is a cross sectional study conducted at Institute of Mental Health, Hyderabad with aim of study the psychopathology in the family members of alcohol dependent patients. The study group comprised of family members including children of alcohol-dependent patients. The family members from 40 families, constituting forty wives, were taken into the study, they accompanied the patient at the time of admission. The wife were examined using GHQ-30, SF-36, CAGE questionnaire for psychiatric morbidity, physical and mental health and alcohol abuse respectively
